As most of you may not know, I was involved in an accident a couple of days before christmas. Somebody spun out a few cars ahead of me on Highway 100. I stopped before I hit anybody, but the guy behind me apparently didn't leave enough stopping distance between us. Or he was asleep? In any case, he drove between my car and the car next to me, even though there wasn't very much space between the two. He hit both of us, throwing the poor station wagon into the gaurd rail. That car was completely totaled, and I feel really bad for the driver. At the time, I was driving Sasha, and she sustained some damage to her passenger side fender, bumper, and corner light.

After replacing the brake lines, I finally found the opportunity to take her in for an estimate. If you're in the MN area, I highly recommend Crystal Lake Automotive for all your bodyshop work. The people there are friendly, helpful, and the business is run incredibly smoothly. Not to mention they do fantastic work.

Anyway, the estimate was about $1,300 to repair the bumper and fender and replace the light. I faxed the estimate to the insurance company handling the claim, and luckily they are accepting liability. However, they need to have the quote approved by some other department before I can take the car in to have the work done.

So goes another step in the process.

After making some changes to global settings in Joomla, all the links broke. The site was unusable, and only now have I figured out why.

As it turns out, certain things happen when you enable "Search Engine Friendly" links in the global configuration. I solved the problem by moving htaccess.txt to .htaccess and enabling apache mod_rewrite in the global config.

Now I have to fix some of the linking changes I made while I was troubleshooting.

I purchased a 3000gt VR4 without a bumper. I decided that I like the stealth front bumper better than the mitsubishi one, and everybody told me they were a direct replacement for one another. So I ordered a stealth front bumper and had it painted. Unfortunately, I will need to get new headlight covers and mounting brackets.

Today I made an ebay offer to purchase the mounting bracket, so hopefully I can have that ordered soon.

Well the excess length of brake line on the driver's side caused the inside of the wheel to wear through. Unfortunately, I don't know what car the calipers came from, and therefore can't seem to find the brake lines with the required banjo fitting. I have instead elected to replace the caliper with one pulled from a 3000gt SL. The job was made difficult by my inability to get the old line disconnected from the hardline on the car.

After some usage of a dremel, I got the old lines off and replaced the driver's side calipers. The old ones are in such bad shape, it's no wonder I couldn't stop. When I had installed the old lines, I noticed the rubber sheath being on the outside of the braided steel. I assumed this meant that there were three layers, having another hose inside the steel. It doesn't seem like that was the case. Why they manufactured the lines like that, I have no idea. But the braided steel was completely useless. The new lines look much better. The hose is on the inside of the steel, and the fittings appear to have a lot more protection from leakage.

I look forward to getting a new battery and testing the stopping power.

FWD in the winter PDF Print E-mail

While I'm sure having front wheel drive in the winter is better than rear wheel drive, it doesn't compare to all wheel drive. Today I had to drive the Stealth to work because the Talon has a leaky brake line. I miss the security of having all wheel drive and snow tires.

Also, the engine surges, the clutch is spongy, the radio doesn't work properly, and it needs new struts.
